Cyberstalking
This involves the internet being used to constantly harass a person. False accusations are a common kind of cyber harassment, when the stalker will continue to post untrue things about the victim, even making web sites in effort to tarnish their reputation. They may even claim falsely that they are the one under attack. Another form of cyberstalking is encouraging other people to attack the victim, a particularly nasty form of cyber bullying.

Identity theft
As social networks grow ever more popular, fraud and identity theft grows with it. By posting personal information on social networking sites, people are leaving details open for criminals to access and abuse. In fact, there is often more than enough info on a profile page for someone to steal your identity. If your account passwords are easy to guess, a criminal can easily access your personal emails, diverting bank statement for example.

Hacking
This is extremely common and widely reported in the news. Hackers can orchestrate viruses that destroy security barriers on your PC, allowing them to gain access to private information.

Phishing
This occurs where the criminal sends out emails seemingly from reputable companies, asking you for personal information. An example of this is receiving an email from what looks like your bank, leading to a website that asks you to enter your details to continue – a common deceptive tactic.

There are so many different types of web crime, at the more serious end you’ll find crimes like child exploitation or promotion of terrorist material.

There are many ways that you can protect yourself and your information online, like making sure your passwords are not easy to guess and not posting personal details on profile sites.
